Abstract

This study was envisaged in response to the new Modern Foreign Languages GCSE, which features authentic materials and emphasises student spontaneity. The study, centred on a series of six lessons, investigates the implications of using authentic materials as a stimulus for motivation and spoken spontaneity. The results showed a notable increase in motivation and spontaneous speech for most students, although a minority found the challenge de-motivating. There is evidence that these difficulties may be avoided through careful delivery of materials, and through recognition that teacher input defines their ultimate impact. The current lack of provision for incorporating such materials may prevent their sustained use, but this study acts as an initial model for their role in Modern
Foreign Languages learning.
