Abstract

Task-based learning provides an alternative approach to more traditional methods of second language teaching and has remained relatively unexplored in the UK foreign language classroom. This study aims to research the implications of introducing task-basedlearning to a group of demotivated year 10 pupils in a comprehensive secondary school, with a focus on motivation, student progress and pupils’perceptions  A scheme of work was constructed, according to the relevant literature, outlining the criteria of what constitutes a task. The findings indicated a noticeable increase in motivation and students’ perceptions were positive. However, I found that using this approach can be a lot more time - consuming and sIill had to exert some control over the language that students were using in the task.
